🌄 땅에 있는 천체 관측자에게 태양과 달을 포함하는 모든 천체들이 24 시간 동안 원을 그리며 회전하는 것 같이 보인다. 그런데 별자리들의 크기가 다르지만 하늘의 약 1/12 정도이기 때문에 하늘에 있는 원은 12 부분으로 나뉘어져서 마치 태양이 각각의 별자리를 한 달에 하나씩 지나가는 것으로 보인다.
🌄 태양과 달이 하늘에서 지나가는 행로는 거의 같다. 별들 사이에서 태양이 만드는 이 경로가 황도(Ecliptic)이라고 불려졌다. 12 부분들의 각각은 숫자나 문자로 구분된 것이 아니고 그림들과 이름들로 태고 시절부터 구분되어졌다. 아래의 전래 동요는 여러 나라에서 오래전부터 내려온 것이기 때문에 공통 기원에 대한 방증이 되고 있다.

🌄 구약 성경은 태양, 달, 그리고 황도대의 12 별(별자리)들이 요셉 가족과 관련이 있음을 암시한다.
